A Thaw is Coming

The temperature rises
and my spirits lift.
The world is still a mass
of gray and brown
and dingy white
with only,
here and there,
a patch of sludgy green.

But the air is filled
with a soft damp smell
and a gentle playful breeze,
a promise yet to come.

Squirrels frolic on my roof.
The sounds of birds
and the sounds of water
wiggle their way
through my open windows
along with a slight wind
that already turns chill again.

Maybe it will snow again tomorrow,
but it doesn’t matter.
None of it matters,
not the mud or the slush
or the bare empty branches
scraping the sky.

Nothing can stop
the oncoming spring.
